Thursday nights are seriously the most entertaining nights of my week. They have gone from being the night where we all go out, to the night where we all stay in and hang out in someone’s apartment. This week was my week. I was supposed to make spaghetti and meatballs for dinner but only Katie and Claire could make it, so we made chocolate chip pancakes instead. First off, they don’t do chocolate chips here in Europe, it is a very American thing, therefore you either can’t find them, or you find a very small amount for a ridiculous price. Secondly, they don’t really do pancakes like we do. Their pancakes are more like crêpes, which are very thin pancakes. All things considered, it was a very interesting experiment to make pancakes. We knew about the fact that they didn’t really have chocolate chips so we just got a bar of chocolate and shaved pieces of it. I’m not sure if more of the chocolate shavings went into the actual pancakes or were just eaten by us over the night, but either way, we used an entire 200 gram chocolate bar. Which I am willing to admit is a lot of chocolate, but it was good and the first time I’ve had chocolate since being here, so it was worth it. The pancake dilemma, well we figured that out the hard way when we tried making the first pancake and it wasn’t fluffy, it stayed very thin. What was our solution to that? Add more batter to the pancake and make it fluffy. That was a very bad solution, it still came out fairly thin, but was thicker than a crêpe, so we just dealt with it. All in all they were really good and we agreed that the only thing that was really missing was a can of whipped cream to top the pancakes with. Considering that I was the one who had to get all the supplies for the pancakes if I had gotten a can of whipped cream it would not have lasted long enough for us to even use it on the pancakes. I can easily finish a can of whipped cream on my own within about half an hour if I choose to. So usually if I buy any and it’s not meant for me or it’s supposed to be used for something specific I end up getting 2 cans and I’ll eat one myself, but that’s really all completely irrelevant. Although chocolate chip pancakes have everything to do with the Welsh yodeling.
Even if we choose not to go out on a Thursday night, the people who really want to will still drink. They usually just go to the liquor store and get what they want for the night, which it’s still odd to think that we’re all legal here, but Claire brought some kind of wine with her that they finished off within a couple hours. We were watching/ listening to the music channel and Avril Lavigne came on. I can honestly say I haven’t seen her in a few years or really even heard anything from her in a while. She still looks like she’s 12 and I’m pretty sure that she had the same pink highlights in her hair about 8 years ago when I really listened to her music. Apparently the explanation for that is, she’s Canadian. What that has to do with anything, I have no idea. Actually as much as I’m American and Canada is right there, I’ve never really understood what the deal is with Canadians that people go “Oh they’re Canadian” and there just seems to be some kind of mutual understanding of what that means. I still don’t get it, but I’m also not that curious to ask what people mean by that. Mainly because I don’t feel like getting that shocked “you don’t know?!?” response from anyone. That usually means they’ll spend more time focusing on the fact that I don’t know than just explaining it to me. So I don’t bother. But Avril being Canadian lead to trying to figure out whom the “Canadians” of Europe would be and it was decided that it’s the Welsh. I’m really not going to say who said what because it’s just a lot funnier that this conversation even took place. But the following is how we got to yodeling Welsh from Weshland who look like whales.
Who are the Canadians of the UK?
Is it the Welsh?
What do the Canadians even do?
Maple syrup! Maple syrup and hockey!
Maple syrup! Maple syrup and hockey!
So then what do the Welsh do? They have to do something.
Do the Welsh yodel?
Do the Welsh yodel?
OH MY GOSH! Let’s google it!
Google Search: do the welsh
In the drop down bar the options, where do the welsh come from, and what do the welsh look like, show up.
(Conversation continued)
Where do the Welsh come from?
Welshland
No they come from Wales, there is no place as Welshland in the UK.
What do the Welsh look like?
WHALES!
Haha and I will leave the conversation at that. We did discover that since there was nothing on the Welsh yodeling that they don’t actually do so which was slightly disappointing to find out, but it’s still amusing to think they come from Welshland and look like whales. That was only the first hilarious conversation of the night, but I do think it was highlight of the night. We also talked about gingers and whether or not 2 gingers make a ginger baby. Claire is a ginger and was talking about how she wants to find herself an Irish man to have ginger babies with. So we googled it, and by now I feel like we should know better than to ask google, but we did anyways. It led us to this site: http://www.jlowman.com/Gingerkids.htm which you can choose to look at yourself if you really want to. It’s a site that has a few true facts about ginger kids and the rest of it is all about the stereotypes and making fun of gingers. So you can look at it if you so choose, but after seeing the site our conversation on gingers ended and we ended up getting chips (fries) and talked about planning a trip to London one weekend in March. We really want to figure out our plan for April, but we’re waiting till we get our whole group together to do that. We try doing everything together for the most part, so when we decide to do big trips we’ll wait till we’re all together and can talk instead of doing it all via facebook.
Outside of Thursday nights there really isn’t much that goes on unless we go somewhere for the weekend, which we did not do this weekend. Mainly because next Thursday we’re leaving on a trip to Northern Ireland and coming back on Monday, so we’re trying to keep our plans for other weekends. We were supposed to go to the museum today but that didn’t end up happening and we’ll probably go in a couple weeks, so it works out. I just remembered, it is officially spring here. As of February 1st, also known as Saint Bridget’s day, it is spring in Ireland. It makes me miss the weather back home even less. I’m sorry if you all end up having to do Saturday classes or lose your spring break, I’ve seen all of the news on how the snow is hurting the school systems and they’re trying to find ways to make up for all of the lost time. Best of luck with all of that this semester, Huskies, you’ll still be getting out long before I do, so it isn’t too bad. To everyone at Merritt High School tonight, have a blast! Wish I could be there for that.
With Love Always
I find your attempt at making chocolate chip pancakes quite amusing.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Merritt High School was a very interesting place!
